Making builds tighter by playing against compu

Moments to pay attention to

1) 3rd pylon has to be built before nexu if no workers cut - OK x2
     - getting blocked by this affects A LOT

2) right after nexu - gass and another pylon(? or is nexu enough supply) - OK x2
     - if nexu is actually built in time it will be enough - OK x 1

3) if making many units from one gate the 2 gates will not arrive when warptech

4) after 3+ gates pylons seem to get forgotten -> leads to floating minerals

5) seem to lack gass to make all templars
    - how many sentries required?
    - make rest of the warp round zealots

6) nice timing with respect to upgrade being ready in 1st, in 2nd had to wait for +1 attack
    - maybe because twilight was way earlier than forge
    - with forge 1st goes nicely - OK x2
    - twilight should be built somewhat later? will defense hold without chargelots?

Just a thought..x2

1) I should try to remember the prizes for different buildings and try to add them as fast as possible. pylon is 100, gate 150, gass 75, probe 50 and core 150 but that's about it.

2) I should make better usage of the hotkeys. When checking the hotkey usage in sc2grears i seem to be using mostly 1 (nexus), 2(gates) and 6(main army).

A PvT match after the looong break

A long break because of work, watching replays and something I can not right put my finder to..
However feeling very fueled due to this weekend Dreamhack stream <3


Had a game against a diamond Terran

Major mistake nro 1: 3-4 mining bases & only 6 gates
Why: still not remembering to always add gates/robos when expanding?
Next time: when expanding always add production before or right after

THIS IS ACTUALLY SO IMPORTANT MISTAKE THAT I SHOULD SOLVE IT RIGHT NOW BEFORE CONCENTRATING ON ANYTHING ELSE!

Major mistake nro 2: No "victory plan" ?
Why: No predecided time/times when to attack and kick ass
Ponderings: This is what I very often seem to be missing. This build feels very strong when the storm and upgrades finish. Maybe I should use that and try to build a strong army for that particular point in game. Maybe add colossus tech and expand behind if seems that can not break the opponent?
Next time: Practice building a strong army for that point and then test in ladder what it loses to and learn to scout it?

Major mistake nro 3: No nice tech switch to colossus
Why: Bay was late. Robo also?
Next time: Build bay if the attack does not seem to crush the opponent.

Minor mistake nro 4: Army position and spotters
Why: Was not able to defend 3rd because army at ramp & not in between. Also did not see the attack in time because pylon was so close to the nexus.
Next time: Have an observer hanging out in the attack route to the 3rd. Or a zealot. A zealot would have more psychological effect?

What about 'em probes: 5/10/15 was 18/38/53

Things to celebrate:

2nd set of scouting practice

With the twist of added reaction goals ^_^.

First goal is to come up with reaction goals :D

Game 1: plat zerg on Daybreak, when scout arrived (15) no pool, exp 2:59 imo latish but could have not been earlier. Took gas quickly 3:45. Early exp 5:06. Droning like mad. The early gas was used for lair. Rest 3 gasses taken after lair. Had ~no units. Should have punished for that.

Scouting is funkey, but you should also react to the information you have obtained. Adding this to scouting practices.

Summary of things learned about scouting (will be updated)

1. The attitude or mindset actually has an effect! I am always too scared to scout zerg, however I very often push for information when playing against terran. This allows me to quite often have the feeling of over powering the terran. As a conclusion when ever scouting think "I'm scouting your game plan so get the hell out of my way".

2. A rather efficient way to improve seems to be the way of making a list of things to scout and then trying to improve on few of them at a time. It feels even more feasible if the list is arranged so that the things to be scouted are in chronological order.

3. It will improve your game sense if you write down what you scouted, how you reacted and what could have been a better reaction. One of the good starting points is to number the attacks that came and whether you were able to scout them and what was your reaction etc.

4. Scouting can be maybe grouped?
  1.  is it a cheese
  2. macro vs tech style? (base count vs gass count)
  3. 1st tech choice: T (bio/mech/biomech), Z (lings/banes/roaches), P (air/robo/twilight)

Did not see 1st attack comming - would not have suffered so much if saw. Could have seen by having observers or towers.
Did not have Xelnaga towers. Units were in the main army and accidentally drew them back.
Part of scouting failed because of faulty wall.
! in Shakuras it is good to place observers between the central cliffs
? before when zerg must have made tech choise? This one made roach warren around 6:30.

2nd Game against a gold zerg
Scouted 14 pool - yeah, was 14 pool - should have not made gate, should have made nexus, maybe even cancelled forge?  or maybe in Cloud Kingdom not necessary to get forge at 12? if not pool when you arrive then go nexus first?
Scouted 2nd. 3:03, no gass only pool. Is this late or normal?
Haha, pylon at 3rd cause it to be late and floating minerals. This pylon will be useful if did not take gasses. Because then can not do anything before has destroyed the pylon. 2 pylons even better?
Did not scout roach warren.
Scouted lair.
Had the other Xelnaga for quite long. Should have retaken.
Scouted hive and infestation pit and spire. Destroyed spire.
Did not pay any attention to gasses of 2nd and 3rd.
During late game was not aware of the base count.
Did not know about corruptors or broodlord count.
Did not know about ultralisks.
Keep observer in army to destroy creep.

Same in Ohana, if no pool when you get to the base it is going to be exp 1st or 14 pool or later.
Delayed natural with pylon.
Should have checked 3rd base earlier.
Did not scout gasses until observer. Is this bad?
If does not take gasses from 2nd and 3rd will not have gass for units? -> makes mainly lings
Had good vision from Xelnaga during whole early game.
Scouted lair.
Scouted roach warren. Did not keep count on his roaches and lings?
Using a forward pylon near 4th & 5th -> usually fast reinforcements. Vision about expansions.
--> Scout tech and then go to his units.

4th Game against a gold zerg
Did not scout ninja 3rd even tho suspected it.And actively scouted the standard location.
Scouted latish pool, exp, relatively fast (?) gass. If pool is almost ready when you arrive to last location in antiga it was a 14 or later.
I gass in this case meant speedlings.
Scouted roach warren - but did not see many roaches mostly lings.
Scouted lair.
Scouted at 10:40 that had all 4 gass.
Failed to scout mutas? Moved observer away just before the gasses were taken and spire built. Moved observer back but did not check the back of the base.
Could not find his army. Scout locations where you do not want the army to be in and if is not in those then expand?
Scouted that units were mostly lings.
Had Xelnaga nicely until mid game.

5th Game against a gold protoss
Successfully scouted 4 gate - but reaction was wrong.

6th Game against a silver zerg
Was able to delay hatch for a bit
Scouted hatch first but did not have forge so went nexus first
Scouted one gass right after pool & hatch-> ???
When scouted at 5mins saw only one gass still and only pool as tech structure, when do zergs usually make new tech? at 6 mins? Roachwarren at 5:30, so scout maybbe a bit of?
Also this time fast 1 gas was associated with ling speed.
Scouted no 3rd before 8:30 so made sure not to expand too hastily.
Scouted no 3rd before 9:55 and though that was weird considering the small amount of units.
Scouted when the 3rd was finally built at around 12 -> as a reaction also expanded.
Scouted lair but did not "notice" it.
Scouted roach tech and that roaches were being made.
Scouted whenhad no upgrades.

Poor Xelnaga control.

Overlord at the back of the 4th. If you think it is nice to place pylons at 3rd, 4th and 5th then maybe zerg thinks this same is nice to do with overlords and terran that with marines.
Would a 3 stalker scout squads be bad or overkill? Also observer against zerg? They could scout for hostile units and hold towers?

  2. When scouting his base 1st time
    • how much chrono does he have (4gate in time or not at all or not in time)
    • 1 or 2 gasses?
    • is gateway building zealot before core?
    • if no zealot & 2nd gass + does not make another gate in time --> attack with stalker & zealot
    • is the stalker chronoed or not (takes 10sec to pop out)

Maybe I should pick up a training schedule. Like 5 games per day etc. I just have to kick myself back to good practice.

Maybe I haven't played since I already got promoted to gold league and platinum feels unrealistic to be reached before next year..

Yay, improving in mechanics

^___^ Just by knowing that this can be done I did it <3 <3
  1. pressing space (base hotkey) after building a pylon to get fast back to mineral line
  2. clicking a bit forward from gate/pylon/building before clicking from the minimap to keep probe moving (copied from HerO)

Back to basics?

I set up a list of small things to check that are ok.

Building placement:
Do units get stuck behind or between structures? How to avoid this?
How does your building placement act towards you and attacker when you are defending drops?
How do your buildings increase your base awareness?
Supporting mechanics: How do you perform building placement? How could it be more efficient?

Macro:
Nonstop worker production. Should the unit production also be nonstop or reactive? From robo and stargates maybe nonstop but from gates? Did you have too many or too few units? Why were there too much or too few?
Supporting mechanics: Checking probe & unit production frequently enough.

Expanding:
when ever you have enough units to defend your expansion and have enough money to build one. So basically? How much does he have units? Is he going to attack? Did you have enough units, too few units or too many units? Did you expand when you could have unit and money wise done so? When did these suitable spots occur? Did you make additional unit production facilities before you expanded?

Initial scouting:
How well did you control you probe? What do you want to find out? When can you leave and why? Did you probe die? Was your macro affected? How do pros perform this initial scout?

Keeping Xelnaga towers:
What are the benefits you find?

Army positioning:
Are you grabbing the best defensive advantage? How could you have more defensive advantage?

Teching:
Gass means going down the tech tree. When can you afford to start collecting gass or using it for tech? Haha, what if you just take gass very greedily like before some important first buildings? What can this lead to?
Does optimal teching mean that you place the tech as you have enough gass? So does optimizing a build mean that at that moment you will have enough minerals also?
Did you advance through the tech tree? Where did you stop? Why? How smooth was this advancement? Maybe make a plan how to tech through the whole three? What are the rock, paper and scissors? The amount of units might change its rock, paper, scissors status?

Upgrades:
Did you keep them strolling? Were you ahead or behind your opponent? Why did you not built forge earlier?

An incoming attack:
Did you see the attack coming? Why you did or did not? Did you know what upgrades, what composition and what unit count? What was your reaction? Was this the best solution or could something have been done otherwise?

seems that the list became quite long :p. Maybe just pick few things and check that you are improving on those. Or make it like a game: 1st 1 thing, then 2 things, then 3. etc. See if you can go over the limit of human mind (4-7).

Studying HerOism

Spent 30mins watching Liquid'HerOs stream to make notes about his mechanics:

Stays at the zerg base with scout probe as long as sees a drone leaving?

Has two probes hot-keyed: the other is scout and the other is builder?
Quickly moves to builder to make the forge and then goes back to micro the scout at zerg natu.

Did not always have main army in one hotkey o.o
Had prism in a hotkey.

Had core hot-keyed when still building o.O and when researching
Does the core have a similar symbol as nexus when is chronoed? could he be checking this to ensure continuous chronoing?

After building a pylon with the scout probe made it move to location in same screen. Is this to preserve the movement of a probe to later give it a new target location?

The nexus building probe was standing and waiting at the spot where the expansion was supposed to be built.

Selected a probe and sent it to the spot where wanted to built. Did xxxx. Went back to probe to build gate. I do this also, Goodiness ^-^.

Gaps in probe production after 2nd was established.Was chasing phoenixes.When the phoenixes come make sure that you are macroing and teching normally.

1) Lost to a platinum Zerg
Pool - expand - nothing but drones - expand
A 3 basing zerg can tech faster because it has 6 gasses. But if he techs faster he wont have as much units. Do not allow this. If you keep attacking zerg he can not pile up larva and will feed you manageable piles of units.

Allowed to take fast 3rd.Did not attack.Could have made huge damage if had attacked so that attack would have arrived @ 10min. Next time just attack if there is a 3rd.
Allowed zerg to held vision.Did not take xelnaga. Too few observers.Force yourself to have vision and to knowin what stage is his army: size, unit composition, upgrades.
+1s upgraded nicely but then.. :(Did not have money to make twilight and then forgot to make.What is the price for twilight? Just wait till this amount and then make it. 150 minerals, 100 gass.
Drop destroyed robobay.Was too available for an attack.Better protection by other buildings. Try to place into the heart of the building pile or between main and nat.
Should have pushed @ 12 minutes.Was afraid that he had too many units.4 expansions even with three should be around equal.. so no way whould have had enough units.
Lost 3rd. Units were not in place to protect 3rd.Leave someone at tower and keep between 3rd and nat to protect both.
Teching to colossos against zerglings.Zerglings just die lol :DMake colossus and have zergling barbeque.
Did not tech to stargates.Didn't have the will to do it?Voidrays are nice against roaches & zerglings. Momma ship.. Carriers would be nice to try.
Getting reinforcements was hard.No forward pylon.Make a forward pylon before or around when you attack. If zerg takes a fast 3rd, make a forward pylon near to it.
Poor army exchange rate.Army got split by terrain.Try to make sure that army walks together and is not split.
Gaps in probe production. Was focusing on the army. Keep in mind to all the time check that you are macroing while looking at the army.

Went forge, nexus, pylon.Nexus could have been earlier? 1st lings out @ 4mins + time to travel.The same?
Core was not immediately when it could have.Because was looking at the scout probe.Try to macro better even if looking at the probe.
Supply block at 52.Maybe was forgetting to build pylons.Be aware that this is a problematic time in your macro.
Was not aware of the 3rd base too soon.Did not scout activelyMake sure that you have as many expansions as the zerg == you are ahead.
1st defence against mutas nice. But too little information.Mutas killed all visible scouts.Against a muta player make good obs positions to be able to get there before attack comes.
No forward pylon.Was destroyed.Should have rebuilt forward pylons or built them into more hideen places.
Expansion timing was great.Was putting some pressure. A pressured mutalisker has to defend and can not attack.Pressure more.
Immortals were doing nothing. Can not shoot air. Make immortals and zealots to attack something on the ground and stalkers to attack mutas.
Could not make upgrades nicely. There was no twilight. Remember to make the twilight during the +1 armor upgrade.
Immortals got raped by mutas. There were no stalkers to protect them. Make sure to warp in stalkers nearby or retreat before losing stalkers.
Fought in the vicinity of spines. Spines nicely snipe stalkers. Do not fight near spines if the opponent has units but try to find a better location. In here could have been backed up to ramp and still would have been able to give pressure.
Army was mispositioned when was on 3 bases. Wanted also to have short distance to main. More map visibility by observers around main base and cannons not into the back but to form defence lines.
Templars late. Was too scared to tech. Do not be scared. Templars are just so op against mutas. If you see mutas tech to templars as fast as possible.
Was not aware of zerg tech. Lazy scouting. Try to have the enthusiasm to be aware. Like with terran. Otherwise it will be surprise broodlard tiem.
4th expansion late. Money was running out. Should have expanded to 4th, but when? Before 20mins? Zerg was on 3 bases so basically should have been ok.
Did not do too much droppery harrash. Only one prism. Not doing simultaneously with main army fights to cause more trouble. Try to use several prisms and do drops during or right before engagements or as blind. Practice how to do blind drops.
Nice scouting. Long, was able to gather quite a bit of information. Observer arrived quite soon after final probe had died and was able to see spire. Try to see how many bases, how many gasses, what tech.
Was able to wallin corretly even if was Daybreak Had practiced and taken pictures. This seems like a suitable way to learn.

Nydus T_TAllowed worm to be summoned.Put a probe or some other unit to scout the edges of your base if the zerg is not expanding to 3 bases.

Did not know what the zerg was teching into.No observers, no drop scouting.More observers.
Was aware of base count.Wanted to really know if there was and thus actively scouted.the same
Could have / should have teched earlier to colossai. Was too afraid to make the bay. Try to build the bay before 14:47.
Colossus was super effective against speedlings. Colossus is good against pretty every ground unit (not ultralisk)? - Make colossus and secure 3rd with it.
Nice protecting ff:s Enough sentries and made them early enough. Try to have 4 sentries early and >8 midd and late.
Floated minerals after warpgates were morphed around 9mins. Did not warp in frequently enough. Check warpgates more often.
A pause in upgrades. Twilight was late and took long before made +2 weapons up. Put twilight down earlier, when the +1 armor is ½ way.
Forward pylon a bit too far. Takes time for reinforcemenst to come. Make more offensive forward pylon.
